RUNNING MATTERS

RUTH, 28-YEAR-OLD RUNNER WITH AN ENTHUSIASM DISPROPORTIONATE TO PACE. I BLOG ABOUT MY RUNNING AND OTHER RUNNING RELATED MATTERS.

Run type: Mile test

Length: 1 mile

Time: 8 minutes 20 seconds

Notes: Felt like doing a mile test, since I haven’t done one since before the 3 weeks I had to take off, and I wanted to know if I have got faster from cross training. Very pleased with a result 10 seconds faster than my previous best, and especially since I did it after an hour of hard cycling. Completely a what-the-hell-why-not idea, really.

Run type: Fartlek

Length: 5.5 miles

Time: 55 minutes

Average Pace: 10 min/mile

Notes: Had sore legs during this one, since it was almost immediately after playing tennis for a few hours, but otherwise felt good. Glad to have made 19.5 miles this week, and hoping to keep that mileage next week, though I’ll be having a long weekend off next weekend.

06.09.2014

Run type: Fartlek

Length: 4 miles

Time: 40 minutes

Average Pace: 10 min/mile

Notes: I’m aiming for 20 miles this week, to then get to 25 again in a few weeks, and still keeping the majority of runs as double days with cycling or tennis as the other workout. I was glad to manage this one as the rain and a heavy week made it pretty hard work.

Run type: Fartlek

Length: 5 miles

Time: 50 minutes

Average Pace: 10 min/mile

Notes: Felt really sluggish at the beginning, partly from the double workout day, but much better from a mile or so in, and managed some good hill work.

Yosemite’s beauty is hard to describe, it’s quiet, peaceful, yet overwhelming grand and powerful.

Run type: Fartlek

Length: 5 miles

Time: 50 minutes

Average Pace: 10 min/mile

Notes: Some steep hills and the last 10 mile on the road — trying to slow build in different surfaces again to my running. Think I’ve mastered the morning-running/evening-tennis days now — played for a few hours later on and although the run was quite hard work, managed the tennis with no fatigue.

31.08.2014

Run type: Fartlek

Length: 4 miles

Time: 39 minutes

Average Pace: 9.75 min/mile

Notes: I haven’t actually had 2 months off even though I haven’t posted in a while — I had about 3 weeks off while recovering from some piriformis issues and then some lower back pain, then have been easing back into it. In the last 2 months I’ve been concentrating on cycling as cross training, with a heavy focus on high intensity sprint intervals, and the running I’ve done has been much less structured — a lot of running trails at varied pace for shorter distances of 4 to 6 miles. I think, if anything, the lower mileage combined with cross training (I’ve started playing tennis again and that’s injected a lot of sprinting into my training) has increased my overall fitness, though I am keen to build back up to around 25-30 miles a week — the mileage that I seems to give me the best overall fitness without compromising my injury risk.

This morning’s run: 6 miles and actual sunshine
